The Nutcracker, a Christmas dance treat

In the sumptuous atmosphere of London’s Coliseum, young and old, couples and families, friendly groups and solo attendees have all come to get some Christmas magic.

The English National Ballet’s Nutcracker will serve you the awe-inspiring pirouettes, grands jetés, tours en l’air, arabesques and pas de deux that only the most gracious ballet dancers can pull off, but the production is much more than that.

The Nutcracker

It’s a tale of good and evil, dream and reality, youth and adulthood that is all magically told through Tchaikovsky’s splendid score, played live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic. It’s a treat for your eyes, ears and indeed, your hearts.

Immerse yourself into the magical world of Clara and her enchanted Nutcracker doll as they venture through the Land of Snow and fight the Mouse King, encountering all kinds of magical treasures along the way, before finally returning to reality.

The stage is so impressively designed to joggle between snowy outdoors and cosy indoors, with a majestic Christmas tree in the background and costumes glittering at every turn – a sparkling effect that has been enhanced with about £10,000 worth of Swarovski elements, by the way! – it’s easy to be drawn into Carla’s fantasy world.

And hats off to the young talent on stage. It’s not every day we get to see such youth – children, in fact – dance with superb prowess on one of London’s most commendable stages. That just makes it impossible not to keep a warm smile throughout the entire performance.

Wayne Eagling’s choreography and Tamara Rojo’s artistic production have turned ballet and fairy-tale into the most amorous match for this winter season. The Nutcracker is truly a delightful Christmas treat for all ages.
